Pessoal aqui tá parecendo os comentaristas de um certo blog de um gordo por aí. Se não lançam o novo, reclamam. Se lançam, reclama que está atrasado. Golf VII nem chegou e já estão endeusando. The 2013 Hyundai Elantra, 2013 Ford Focus, 2013 Dodge Dart, and 2014 Scion tC have emerged near the top of the latest round of Insurance Institute for Highway Safety testing. All four compacts have earned Top Safety Pick+ status, joining the 2013 Honda Civic coupe and sedan.
In its latest round of testing, the IIHS focused on compacts, and while no tested car could match the Civic’s good overall rating in the new small overlap test, the Dart, Focus, Elantra, and refreshed 2014 tC all managed acceptable ratings and the TSP+ status. To become a TSP+, vehicles must get good ratings in four of five tests and a rating of at least average in the new small overlap test.
Top Safety Pick+ Compacts
2013 Ford Focus sedan front 300x199 imageThe Hyundai Elantra received the TSP+ rating even though the IIHS says the safety belt allowed the dummy to move forward 11 inches. The Elantra sedan has an overall five-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Dodge Dart does as well, though a problem with an IIHS on-board camera forced the organization to test the car twice. In the second small overlap test, the driver door opened after the hinges tore away from the frame, leading to an average overall small overlap test. Even so, the Dart is a TSP+, like the Ford Focus, which gets a five-star overall NHTSA safety rating in sedan and hatch form.
The refreshed 2014 Scion tc coupe appears in the TSP+ category because the automaker tweaked the airbag, programming it to deploy in a small overlap crash. Like the Dart, Focus, and Elantra, the tC scored average in the small overlap test and is five-star rated by the NHTSA.
Compacts With “Marginal” Small Overlap Test Results
The Chevrolet Sonic nearly reached TSP+ status, if not for a side curtain airbag that didn’t deploy until after the dummy’s head had already moved toward the open driver’s side window. The Volkswagen Beetle wasn’t so close: the steering column moved five inches to the right in the small overlap test, meaning the “dummy’s head barely contacted the front airbag,” and the seat belt allowed the dummy to move forward 13 inches. The Chevrolet Cruze also received a marginal small overlap rating. The Cruze and Sonic are TSPs, while the Beetle hasn’t yet been side-impact tested. All three vehicles received a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA.
Compacts With “Poor” Small Overlap Test Results
2014 Kia Forte IIHS side view 300x199 imageAt the bottom of the IIHS’ chart of recently small-overlap tested compacts is the Nissan Sentra, 2013 Kia Soul, and 2014 Kia Forte, in that order. For the Sentra, the IIHS says the seat belt had too much slack and the side curtain airbag didn’t provide enough forward coverage (the dummy’s head hit the windshield pillar and instrument panel). The Nissan Sentra hasn’t yet been side-impact or roof-strength tested, but does have a four-star overall NHTSA rating. The 2013 Kia Soul also has a four-star overall NHTSA rating, and is an IIHS TSP. The pre-refresh Kia Forte sedan is also an IIHS TSP, and has a four-star overall NHTSA safety rating.
Next up on the IIHS’ list is minicars. Since small cars didn’t perform quite as well as midsizers, it will be interesting to see if any vehicle the IIHS qualifies as a “minicar” gets the TSP+ rating.
