Type names
until 1954
The vehicles received a designation from to one or more letters and a number (e.g. L 3500). The first letter was always a L (for
truck), partly followed L further letters, which had information over the kind of the vehicle (see below). The following number corresponded in for instance the
pay load of the vehicle in kg.
1954-1963
The letter combination remained, the following number corresponded now however for the past internal type names (e.g. LS 315), not after weight and motorizing arranged themselves and to any form of logic missed.
1963 until today
In order to bring back an order into the completely chaotic type name of the trucks, a new system was introduced. The letter combination (see below) was maintained first, it followed three or number four digit (e.g. LP 608 or LAK 2623). With three-figure numbers the first number in for instance the permissible
total weight (no longer the
pay load) corresponds, with numbers four digit gives the two first numbers over the total weight to information. With the LP 608 thus about 6 t would be, with the LAK 2623 about 26 t. The two last numbers indicate approx. a tenth of engine performance in HP. The LP 608 would have thus an engine performance of approximately 80 HP, the LAK 2623 about 230 HP.
With introduction of the new generation 1973 the letters of this series became
behind the number set, whereby the letters L and P were void. The same procedure was used during the introduction of the process card types, the remaining vehicles kept its designations however.
Meanwhile the vehicles are provided additionally with names (Actros, Atego etc.).
