The Volkswagen Golf GTI is the proverbial hot hatch, but the car's 2.0-liter TSI engine is starting to look a little dated.Thankfully a new report is indicating the next-generation model will come with an upgraded engine that develops 220 hp (164 kW / 223 PS). That's not a huge increase, but it's certainly a welcome improvement over the current 207 hp (155 kW / 210 PS). Furthermore, there's word that both the GTI and R variants will adopt a new electronically-controlled locking differential for improved handling.
In related news, Autocar is reporting Volkswagen is more likely to approve the Golf R Cabrio than the Golf GTI Cabrio. As we have previously reported, the model featured a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with 270 PS (199 kW / 266 hp) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque. It enabled the drop top to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in "less than six seconds" and hit a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).
