Tesla Model S involved in 'unintended acceleration' incident [UPDATE]



The words "unintended acceleration" have, in the last few years, been closely connected to Toyota. While today's news is just one case, it does attach the phrase to a new car, the Tesla Model S. Here's the situation.

One Model S owner complained to NHTSA yesterday that his wife took the car for a drive over the weekend and, as she was leaving the driveway, "the car suddenly accelerated. It hit a curb and the middle portion of the car landed on a 4.5-foot high vertical retaining wall." The question is why, and the complaint alleges that even though a Tesla engineer told the owner that the accelerator has a built-in safeguard to stop it from going above 92 percent, the records show that the pedal was depressed and the car, "accelerated from 18 percent to 100 percent in split second." The owner denies that his wife stepped all the way down on the pedal.

We have contacted Tesla for comment but have not yet heard back. We will update this post if we do. Until then, you can read the entire complaint (#10545230) below.

*UPDATE: Tesla would not give any specific comment on this complaint, but did tell AutoblogGreen that, "Tesla takes vehicle safety very seriously and are looking into this."

GM CEO Akerson calls out Tesla, says Cadillac will compete on EVs

Cadillac will be taking on Tesla Motors, the underdog EV manufacturer that's seen heaps of critical acclaim and stock market buzz with its most recent sedan, the Model S. "If you want to compete head-to-head with Tesla, and we ultimately will, you want to do it with a Cadillac," Dan Akerson, the chairman and CEO of General Motors, told media in Washington, according to The Detroit News.

Akerson continued, telling The News, "We'll sell more Volts and lose less money on the Volts than they'll lose on the Model S." He also took time to point out that Tesla getting vehicles out to customers isn't a guarantee of success or permanence, using Fisker as an example, saying "Does anybody even remember Fisker? I mean, there were a number of them; they are all gone."

This strong talk from Akerson comes after Doug Parks, another GM exec, let slip that the Detroit-based manufacturer has an EV in the works that will cover 200 miles per charge and only cost about $30,000, a massive upgrade over similarly priced EVs that struggle to top 100 miles per charge. Until that vehicle arrives, though, GM is preparing the Cadillac ELR, a small coupe that, like the Volt with which it shares technology, uses a gas engine as a mobile generator to recharge the batteries. Akerson took aim at Tesla again, saying, "But I do think when the ELR comes out late this year, early next – it's certainly the same postal code as Tesla, but now we're going to move up. It's not going to be a mass-produced car."

Tesla had no direct comment on Akerson's comments about the Model S financial losses, but spokesperson Shanna Hendriks did tell AutoblogGreen that, "the more EVs on the road, the better and more likely we will achieve the mission to catalyze the market for EVs."

GM's EV efforts have been limited, relative to other manufacturers, as its opted to focus on the Volt's innovative drivetrain. Despite this, its history in electric cars is a rich one, dating back to the EV1, and most recently with the new Spark EV.

Esse Caddy híbrido vai ser qualquer coisa...

Bem na minha concepção esses híbridos tinham que ter maior autonomia no modo elétrico, e o motor a combustão servir apenas como backup para chegar ao próximo posto de recarga da bateria e nada mais.

Ah sim, se andasse 200 milhas no elétrico e tivessen o motor a combustão ainda faria bem mais sentido do q esses atuais.

Tipo assim: Faltam x quilômetros para chegar ao próximo ponto de recarga, e a carga atual não será suficiente para alcançá-lo, então ativa-se o motor a combustão para chegar até lá, ou seja um backup para ser usado em emergência e não todo o tempo.

O Volt era pra ser assim, o ICE só seria um gerador temporário pro motor elétrico, mas na verdade não é. O ICE pode sim tracionar as rodas diretamente.

Bem, ele deve evoluir para um nova configuração no futuro, segundo entrevista de um dos engenheiros da GM quando tiverem baterias com maior autonomia o motor a combustão será um mero gerador de carga para o pack de baterias.
