Report: Tesla in talks with BMW about batteries, charging collaborations



With Toyota and Daimler no longer holding Tesla shares, the electric vehicle company might be looking for a new partner - possibly a Bavarian one. In a new interview with Germany's Der Spiegel, CEO Elon Musk confirmed that he has had talks with BMW execs about future collaboration.

"We are talking about whether we can collaborate in battery technology or charging stations," Musk said in the interview, according to Reuters. However, a Tesla spokesperson has tempered things by saying no formal agreements are in place at the moment.

In the same interview, Musk reportedly praised BMW's use of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic in its i sub-brand offerings, and said he would like to have a battery factory in Germany in the next five or six years.

The possibility of technological cooperation between Tesla and BMW has been a hot topic this year. In June, Musk reportedly met with BMW execs, and the two companies were also rumored to have met with Nissan to discuss charging technology. When Daimler sold off its shares, there was talk of it opening the way for possible collaboration between the two automakers, as well.

Tesla Model S Reviewed During Long-Distance Trip in the U.S.

What better way to test the Tesla Model S’ driving range than taking it on a long-distance trip, say from Santa Monica, California to Phoenix, Arizona?

It’s a legitimate question since the Model S is the electric vehicle with the highest driving range on sale today – up to 265 miles (426.5 km) for the P85+ version in the EPA 5-cycle test.

UK magazine Auto Express editor-in-chief Steve Fowler drove a Tesla Model S P85+ for over 300 miles (483 km) from Santa Monica, California to Phoenix, Arizona to find out how usable the car is in real-world situations.

Since the trip was longer than the car’s driving range, Fowler also had the chance to test Tesla’s Supercharger network, as well as the power-sharing network for Tesla owners. Head down to find out how the trip went.

Saleen Updates Tesla Model S-Based FourSixteen, Renames it ST

The Saleen FourSixteen is a tuned version of the all-electric Tesla Model S that made its debut last summer at Pebble Beach. Based on the P85 Performance version, it boasted revised adjustable suspension, new final gear ratio, a unique locking differential and sporty seats and came with a price tag of US$152,000.

The car was named the FourSixteen as a reference to the 416HP output of the Model S. Now that Tesla has introduced the 691HP P85D, though, the tuner decided that the name was no longer applicable. Thus, it gave its model the designation of ST, which is short for Saleen Tesla.

While it will continue delivering FourSixteen vehicles that have been ordered, Saleen is now offering a complete lineup of Model S-based models. The base 380HP version is the ST380 and the 691HP P85D is the ST691.

Saleen’s modifications over the stock Tesla saloon include suspension upgrades, a modified interior, carbon ceramic brakes and that final gear ration that reduces the already impressive 3.2-second 0-60 mph time to a nice, round 3.0 seconds. Prices before federal and/or state incentives start at US$132,000 for the base ST380 and rise to US$164,600 for the range-topping ST691.
