Tesla's new entry-level sedan is the faster, all-wheel drive Model S 70D



Tesla just raised the standard for its base-level sedan, scrapping the rear-wheel drive Model S 60 for the new, all-wheel drive Model S 70D. With prices starting at around $75,000, the 70D is $5,000 more expensive than the 60, but adds a second motor at the front of the vehicle and a bigger, 70 kWh battery pack that bumps up the car's range to an EPA-rated 240 miles.

The 70D is also more powerful than its predecessor, offering a combined 514 horsepower, a top speed of 140mph, and a 0-60 time of 5.2 seconds. In addition to this speed bump (no, not that kind), the 70D comes with access to Tesla's Supercharging network as standard — something that was previously an expensive extra for the Model S 60. Keyless entry and Tesla's Autopilot hardware are also included (although the latter will still need a software update before it's enabled), and customers have the choice of three metallic colors: ocean blue, obsidian black, and warm silver.

Tesla chief Elon Musk says the Model S 70D represents a "slight price increase, but [a] huge value increase." According to a report from Reuters, Musk said that fewer than 10 percent of Tesla's sales were of the rear-wheel drive Model S 60, and although the company was retaining the single-motor Model S 80, it was happy to make the switch to dual motors for its entry-level sedan. "Customers wanted something that had more range and they really wanted all-wheel drive," said Musk. The Model S 70D goes on sale today and will begin shipping to customers in late May.

Elon Musk almost sold Tesla to Google two years ago



In March of 2013, Tesla was in a dire situation: the company was nearly bankrupt, its electric vehicles failing to connect with buyers. But according to a new report from Bloomberg today, Elon Musk had a contingency plan: cash out with Google.

As Tesla was on the downward slope, Elon Musk turned to his friend Larry Page, suggesting Google buy the company, plus $5 billion in factory expenses. It's unclear what the exact offer was, but as Bloomberg points out, Tesla was worth $6 billion at the time. Musk also reportedly asked Page to guarantee him either another eight years running the company, or enough time to produce a third-generation, mainstream electric car.

The talks, according to Bloomberg, were far along. Page reportedly "accepted the overall proposal and shook on the deal." Lawyers spent the next few weeks hammering out details, but it never quite closed.

As we know, the deal never went anywhere. Tesla turned around from the edge of bankruptcy. The company ended up posting a profit in the next few weeks, and even paid back its debts to the Department of Energy. Musk reportedly broke off the deal with Google soon after.

Apple was also rumored to be interested in buying Tesla last year, a deal with a very different tenor than the reported Google buyout. With the news that Apple is working on a car, that speculation has intensified, with investors suggesting Apple would have to pay $75 billion for the car maker.

Tesla's New Battery Can Power Your Home



Tesla Motors [NSDQ:TSLA] CEO Elon Musk caused quite a stir when he tweeted that the company was preparing to unveil a "major new product line" that was "not a car." Most of the speculation quickly turned to stationary batteries that could be used to power a house or business. Those rumors were confirmed last night when Musk unveiled a new line of batteries under the Tesla Energy brand at the company's design studio in Hawthorne, California.

Tesla plans to offer energy-storage systems for both homes and businesses as well as electric utilities. The main advantage of energy storage is that it makes solar power practical in more situations. Batteries can store energy generated during times of peak production, and discharge it later for a more reliable flow of power.

Or, as Musk put it in his remarks at the event, "the sun doesn't shine at night." To increase the utility of solar arrays, there needs to be a way to store energy at night, he said. But, he went on, "the issue with existing batteries is they suck."


Tesla Powerwall Home Battery

The company's first attempt at a battery that doesn't "suck" will be the Tesla Powerwall Home Battery. This is a wall-mounted lithium-ion battery that homeowners can connect to a solar array for energy storage, or program to take in electricity from the grid during off-peak times to cut bills. It can also serve as a backup power source during outages.

Tesla will offer the Powerwall in two configurations. A 7-kilowatt-hour version will sell for $3,000, and a 10-kWh version will sell for $3,500 (to installers). Those prices include installation, while deliveries will begin in late summer. Scaling up from there, Tesla will offer energy-storage systems to businesses. They'll not only make better use of on-site solar panels but—thanks to management software from EnerNOC—the batteries can be programmed to discharge during times of peak usage, helping businesses avoid demand charges from utilities.

Tesla says these batteries will be "based on the powertrain architecture and components" of its electric cars. It's been quietly testing them over the past year with businesses—including Wal-Mart—and has signed up Amazon and Target for pilot programs.


Tesla Energy for utilities

Finally, Tesla will also sell batteries to utility companies in 100-kWh "blocks" that can be configured into storage units ranging from 500 kWh to 10 mWh in capacity.

Moving into the battery business could give Tesla another outlet for lithium-ion cells from its Nevada 'Gigafactory' which is primarily intended to make cells for the upcoming Model 3 electric car. It could also help make Tesla's existing product line more appealing. Electric car owners often install solar arrays to charge up their cars, and of course there's SolarCity, which just happens to be controlled by Elon Musk.

Many people were surprised that Tesla was able to get so far building cars, but now it's time to see if it can succeed outside the auto industry with this new battery venture. Stay tuned.

Essas baterias estarão disponíveis no nosso inverno em larga escala graças a nova Gugafactory de baterias da Tesla, em Nevada.

Tesla is now selling used electric cars for lower prices



Elon Musk now sells used cars. The billionaire's electric car company, Tesla Motors, quietly launched a pre-owned vehicle program at the end of April — a new scheme that offers older versions of its Model S sedan for lower prices than new models. The used cars still come with Tesla maintenance and reliability checks, and like other high-end car makers, Musk's company gives a 4-year or 50,000-mile warranty on pre-owned vehicles.

A Tesla spokesperson told The Wall Street Journal that the used cars would be stored at a Tesla location, allowing customers to collect their car directly, or have it delivered to their home. For now, limited supplies of the used Model S electric cars mean that the new scheme is currently only available in 11 US cities, with supplies coming from display models or owners who traded their older sedans in for new all-wheel-drive models under Tesla's trade-in schemes. But the company can expect an influx of older vehicles soon, as owners who bought their first-generation Model S on a three-year lease in 2013 return the car to the manufacturer.

Used cars on sale via the program are available for between $60,000 to $90,000 — generally cheaper than the same vehicles can be found from individual resellers. The cheaper used cars, which are currently available for purchase via Tesla's official site, make the barrier for electric vehicle ownership lower, a move aimed to help the manufacturer snare new customers at the same time as it disposes of older vehicles that would otherwise clutter up its parking lots and facilities. The new program also gives Tesla a nice new revenue stream: the sale of used cars traditionally yields higher profits than the sale of brand new vehicles.
