Tesla sounds ready to pull the plug on promised battery-swap technology

Imagem

Elon Musk once lauded battery swap as the ultimate solution for zero-down-time electric vehicle "charging," famously demonstrating a live swap on a Model S on stage in mid-2013 — but that technology kind of fell off the map as Tesla focused on building out its network of high-speed Superchargers, finally launching with a whimper at a single California station late last year.

Now, it sounds like swaps are basically dead on arrival. In response to a question from an investor at Tesla's shareholder's meeting today, Musk was brutally honest about the situation:
We have the LA-to-San Francisco pack swap capability in place, and I believe all Model S owners in the California area have been invited at this point to try it out. And what we're seeing is a very low take rate for the pack swap station. So we did an initial round of invitations, where we did basically like 200 invitations, and I think there were a total of four or five people that wanted to do that, and they all did it just once. So, okay, it's clearly not very popular. And then we said, okay, let's expand that invitation to all customers, but I would expect that all customers roughly behave like that initial sample group.

It's just, people don't care about pack swap. The Superchargers are fast enough that if you're driving from LA to San Francisco, and you start a trip at 9AM, by the time you get to, say, noon, you want to stop, and you want to stretch your legs, hit the restroom, grab a bite to eat, grab a coffee, and be on your way, and by that time, the car is charged and ready to go, and it's free. So, it's like, why would you do the pack swap? It doesn't make much sense.

We built the pack swap into the car because we weren't sure if people would want to choose the pack swap or not. We thought people would prefer Supercharging, but we weren't sure, so that's why we built the pack swap capability in. And based on what we're seeing here, it's unlikely to be something that's worth expanding in the future, unless something changes.

For the Superchargers, as we said in the initial press release, the Superchargers are free. It's basically free long distance for life, forever. So free long distance forever is what the Superchargers are providing. Now, there are a few people who are quite aggressively using it for local Supercharging, and we will sort of send them just a reminder note that it's cool to do this occasionally, but it's meant to be a long-distance thing. But it is free long distance forever, and it's basically built into the cost of the car. And based on what we're seeing in terms of the economics, it looks quite supportable.
Of course, the poor uptake Musk saw in the "sample group" is artificially low. The current station does swaps by appointment only; no one refills their car's gas tank by appointment, so it's no wonder no one's getting a battery swap on a regular basis. In reality, Superchargers and battery swaps would both have their place if the swap infrastructure was built out enough — there's something to be said for pulling into a service station on a neighborhood corner and getting a full charge within a few seconds — but the company only has a single trial station running, and it'd be billions of dollars and years away from building that network out. For a company with many priorities, huge ambitions, and limited resources, the swaps are low-hanging fruit to cut.

Musk also mentioned that the first Model X deliveries are just a few months out; given his ambivalence, it wouldn't be surprising if they lost swap support altogether.

http://www.theverge.com/2015/6/9/875466 ... -swap-fail

Tesla announces Model S Ludicrous upgrade, 90-kWh battery

Imagem

Tesla announced some major upgrade options to the Model S today, including bigger batteries and a quicker acceleration mode, called "Ludicrous." That option will take the car from zero to 60 miles per hour in 2.8 seconds. During the hold music for the online press conference, the automaker played some of Ludacris' music, which was the first hint we had for this clever name. The upcoming Model X will also get this Ludicrous mode, which Musk guessed would offer a 0-60 time of 3.3 seconds.

Details for how Tesla can offer this quicker option can be found in CEO Elon Musk's blog post (available below), but the gist is that a new advanced smart fuse for the battery allows an increase in the maximum amp throughout from 1,300 to 1,500 amps. This will cost new buyers $10,000, but current P85D owners can get the upgrade pack electronics for $5,000 plus installation labor, for the next six months.

Tesla is also offering an upgrade to a 90-kWh battery pack for $3,000. Previously, the biggest pack was 85 kWh. Musk didn't have any official range numbers for the new pack, but said that the five-to-six percent increase in capacity should offer a similar increase in range.

The bigger pack is due to improved cell chemistry, Musk said on the call. In the official blog announcement, Musk wrote that Tesla expects to offer about a five-percent increase in battery capacity every year.

Lastly, there is a new lower-cost Model S, the Model S 70 RWD. This will start at $70,000 and has only one motor. The previous base Model S was the dual-motor 70, which is still available and costs $75,000. All of these prices are before incentives.

http://www.autoblog.com/2015/07/17/tesl ... h-battery/

Next Tesla Roadster coming in 4 years, will go plaid

Imagem

Tesla has its electric hands in lots of places these days, most notably with the Model S sedan that gets continuous updates from the factory, but also with upcoming vehicles like the Model X and Model 3. But the California-based automaker hasn't forgotten its roots, which can be traced back to the company's seminal Roadster model. And a new Roadster is reportedly in the works.

Buried in the press release for Tesla's humorously named Ludicrous upgrade for certain Model S sedans is a short blurb about the next Roadster. "There is of course one speed faster than ludicrous, but that is reserved for the next generation Roadster in 4 years: maximum plaid." Reference to one of the greatest roles ever played by Rick Moranis aside, a new Tesla Roadster has been long expected but not recently spoken of.

Confirmation of the next generation of the Tesla Roadster four years from now is great and all, but it leaves us wanting more details on the car's underpinnings, price and expected performance. Assuming Elon Musk means that going plaid, so to speak, is faster than going ludicrous, we'd naturally expect quicker acceleration from Roadster V.2 than the estimated 0-60 sprint of 3.3 seconds expected from the latest Model S P85D with the Ludicrous upgrade.

Diving a little deeper, we'd be shocked if Tesla chose to borrow chassis bits or production assistance from Lotus, which means the Roadster would ride on a platform designed and built by Tesla. Such a platform wouldn't likely be used only for one model, so a cut-down variant of an existing chassis is likely, not that we have any particular inside insight into the operations at Tesla. No matter. Isn't speculation fun?

Tesla To Test Autopilot System Through Consumer Trials

Imagem

Tesla has been teasing its customers with the upcoming Autopilot autonomous driving system for quite some time now. The tech has been hanging in front of their faces for almost a year, but it's finally inching closer to becoming an available reality. According to the UK Business Insider, Tesla is ready to begin testing the system on public roads with select owners.

The California-based automaker says it will be working with a group of Model S owners in an effort to test the autonomous system known as Autopilot. It's clear that the goal of this project is to see how the system responds in the real-world daily driving grind. Assuming the majority of the testing will be conducted with locally sourced owners, Tesla will get plenty of feedback with regard to how the system handles constant traffic, poorly maintained highways, and an extreme disregard for any and all other motorists and their vehicles. Essentially, the real world is the perfect place to test such a system.

Tesla has stated that Autopilot should be treated in the same manner that an actual autopilot system on a jumbo jet would be regarded. A driver can't simply kick back and take a nap. The system will control the action in a safe manner, but human eyes should be monitoring the car and the road ahead. Autopilot will best be used out on the highway where the car will maintain its lane, a proper speed, and a safe following distance from other vehicles in front of it.

We have to assume that the first reports of accidents involving an Autopilot-equipped Model S will be the result of someone else texting their BFF. "OMG A TESLA MODEL S I SHOULD TAKE A PICTURE..."

http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1099 ... mer-trials

Tesla's Model S P85D is so good it broke Consumer Reports' rating system

Imagem

How good is Tesla's Model S P85D? Insanely good, says Consumer Reports, with the electric sedan performing better than any other car the magazine has reviewed and breaking its rating system in the process. "The Tesla initially scored 103 in the Consumer Reports' Ratings system, which by definition doesn’t go past 100," said Consumer Reports. "The car set a new benchmark, so we had to make changes to our scoring to account for it." The P85D had to make do with a score of 100 instead.

Part of the reason for the record-breaking score is the P85D's "insane mode," which Tesla incorporated into the all-wheel-drive car to bring its acceleration up to the levels of the world's greatest supercars. As a result, the P85D was the fastest car ever tested by Consumer Reports, reaching 60 mph from a standstill in just 3.5 seconds. (Slightly faster times of 3.2 seconds have also been recorded.) There are other cars on the market that are faster, but Consumer Reports notes that because the P85D achieved these speeds while still being "ridiculously energy efficient" it earned itself the top score.

"This is a glimpse into what we can expect down the line, where we have cars with the performance of supercars and the comfort, convenience and safety features of a luxury car while still being extremely energy efficient," Jake Fisher, Consumer Report's head of automotive testing told Bloomberg. "We haven’t seen all those things before."

However, says the magazine, just because the car scored 100, it doesn't make it the perfect vehicle. Apart from the six-figure price tag and interior fittings that "aren't as opulent as other high-ticket automobiles," Consumer Reports reminds readers that driving an electric car is still logistically tricky, with journeys longer than 200 miles requiring extra planning. "That said," concludes the magazine, "the Tesla Model S P85D is an automotive milepost."

http://www.theverge.com/2015/8/27/92142 ... er-reports

Tesla is now privately letting customers order their Model X, starting at $132,000

Imagem

It's still not visible on the company's website — but if you put down a deposit ahead of time, Tesla is now letting you spec out your inaugural Model X Signature Series crossover, representing some of the very first production vehicles that roll off the line. The launch of the configurator tool, reported by Bloomberg, has been confirmed to The Verge by a Tesla spokesperson.

Pricing for this version of the X starts at $132,000 before tax credits, but the "Ludicrous Mode" speed upgrade — announced in July — will run an extra $10,000. The online tool lets customers choose their paint and interior colors, select options, and prepare for the inevitable reality of spending a very large sum of money for the only serious electric luxury crossover on the market. This also gives us a first glimpse at the final, uncamouflaged version of the car, which appears largely unchanged from the design prototypes that it has been showing at various auto shows and events for years. As for specs, the 90kWh battery pack (also announced in July) will be good for 240 miles on a charge and a 0-60 time of 3.8 seconds. For comparison, the base Model S P90D is rated for 253 miles with a 0-60 time of 3.1 seconds, so the Model X's additional heft definitely shows here.

This moment has been a long time coming: Tesla has promised September deliveries for the Model X in recent months, but the launch of the model only comes after many months of delays. Elon Musk has admitted that developing the new vehicle was more challenging than the company had originally anticipated (it runs on a modified version of the Model S platform, but there are many unique elements like the so-called Falcon Wing doors that open upward).

But if you haven't put a deposit in, don't expect a delivery any time soon: Tesla's site says new orders won't arrive until "early 2016."

http://www.theverge.com/2015/9/1/924149 ... ator-price
